Anime set during Medieval times seems to be quite popular nowadays, with Akagami no Shirayukihime being no exception. If you ever wished for an anime version of Snow White, your wish has finally been granted.
While this is not a direct adaption of the story of Snow White, Akagami no Shirayukihime (Snow White with the Red Hair) follows an original storyline while borrowing elements from the original story. Shirayuki is a herbalist born with apple-red hair – the townsfolk love looking at her whenever they visit her shop. One day Prince Raji hears about Shirayuki, through one of his messengers, and wishes to make her his concubine. Shirayuki cuts her hair and escapes before Prince Raji can find her. While out in the woods she runs into a young man named Zen, who later gets poisoned by an apple originally given to Shirayuki.
The first episode was very enjoyable to watch and quite unique in the way it made reference to the original Snow White story. While there is no word of dwarfs appearing in the series soon, Zen makes a clever side comment about them when he first meets Shirayuki. From my previous experiences Shoujo usually have a distinct animation style to them. Although Akagami no Shirayukihime‘s animation style isn’t in the traditional shoujo form, its the story that makes it a shoujo anime. What I’ve also enjoyed, based on what I’ve seen so far, is that the show is not over-the-top; everything seems natural.
For now, Akagami no Shirayukihime has won me over in terms of its presentation and take on the Snow White story. Hopefully more things about the story and the characters will be revealed in later episodes, but for now the show has started on a good note with me.
