Growing up I was always used to watching Dragonball Z in English. When I watched the Battle of Gods movie a while back it felt weird listening to the characters speak Japanese, especially Goku. Well, the Dragonball series is back; hoping to be Super effective.
Dragonball Super follows the events after the Majin Buu saga from Dragonball Z. Earth is now at peace and the Z warriors are living normal lives. So far, the story is building up towards the Battle of Gods storyline. For those who have not watched Battle of Gods before: Beerus, the God of Destruction, has awoken from his slumber after many years and has started destroying different planets for his own entertainment. He then seeks out the one they call the “Super Saiyan God” and wishes to fight him.
The series has so far started off quite slowly; with not much action or excitement happening as of yet. I feel as though this slow start is to help us reacquaint ourselves with the Dragonball universe as well as the characters. What I am interested to see, though, is how the series is going to present the Battle of Gods storyline for television: will they do what Ghost in the Shell Arise did and split it into two parts? Or will they take elements from the film and present it in an original format? We’ll just have to wait and see in future episodes.
Despite its slow start, this series definitely looks and feels like Dragonball Z. Although it has been years since it last aired on television, the series hasn’t lost its charm in any way; still giving us moments to laugh and cry about. With Resurrection ‘F’ releasing soon, there is a slight chance that the series might adapt to the new movie. Hopefully, as the series progresses, we will see the characters we know and love beat the holy crap out of their opponents.
