I loved season 1 of KonoSuba when it came out last year. The plot never took itself seriously, the characters were funny and it was just fun to watch. It was a great parody on the Virtual Game genre made famous by Sword Art Online, amongst others. Well, season 2 is here and Kazuma and his merry band of companions are back for a new adventure, this time with Kazuma being deemed a criminal.
Following the events from season 1, Kazuma is being charged after the coronatite that he teleported to save the town destroyed the residence of a lord. Because of this, the state suspects that he is a terrorist or a servant of the Devil King. Kazuma has to prove his innocence while also trying to save up money to reimburse the lord for damages.
I really enjoyed the first episode of season 2 as it clearly established what the narrative of the season was going to be about. This is in contrast to season 1, which felt more like a slice of life. With this change in direction there is high expectations that the series will retain its trademark humour. The first episode definitely made me laugh, especially Aqua’s attempts to break Kazuma out of jail as well as the trial scene. It was interesting how some of the background characters that you don’t usually take notice of had a small part in the trial, mentioning how they witnessed some of Kazuma’s “dirty deeds” in season 1.
So far, KonoSuba season 2 looks like it will live up to expectations and retain its charm that made it a hit last year. While episode 1 only gave us a taste of what’s to come in season 2, I’m sure we’ll see more high jinx moments from our favourite group of adventurers very soon. Naturally, if you haven’t watched KonoSuba before then watch season 1 first.
