School Days: The Dark Side of Love [OWLS Blog Tour February 2019 – Adore]

In February, we will be exploring love and romance. The word selected is “adore” because it has two main connotations: to be loved and respected or to feel worshipped. We will analyze characters that give us a feeling of admiration and explain why we love those characters. We will also be exploring different forms of love (familial, friendship, and even self-love) and how those types of love influence our lives.

For most of you reading this blog tour, you have either heard of or watched School Days sometime in your life. In that respect, you probably know where I’m going to go with this post. If you don’t know about School Days, then that’s probably a good thing because the show is quite infamous (and controversial) among most anime fans for various reasons (more on that later). Despite its notoriety, however, I want to look at how School Days turns the high school romance genre on its head and illustrates the darker side of love not really seen in most romance anime (also, spoilers).

Land of the Rising Queer: Depictions of the Anime Lesbian

So this was an essay I recently wrote for my film seminar on the depiction of lesbian characters in anime in relation to Japan’s view on homosexuality. Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans – First Impressions

Ask any anime fan to name a Mecha anime and chances are the Gundam series will be one of those answers. For a very long time, Gundam has been synonymous with the Mecha genre. The series has expanded its popularity through video games and body kits. In all honesty, this is actually the first Gundam title that I am watching; I’ve heard about the others but never watched them. From what I’ve watched so far, I am getting a sense that this one will be more darker in tone compared to the others, which is a good thing in my opinion.

Concrete Revolutio – First Impressions

Going in to this anime I really expected a lot from it: the plot sounded interesting, it’s produced by Bones (one of my favourite studios since Eureka Seven) and the art style was quite fascinating and different. Sadly, Concrete Revolutio failed to deliver in its first episode. The plot was actually quite confusing and the events being played out didn’t make much sense.

Gakusen Toshi Asterisk – First Impressions

Futuristic Academy Fighters (yes, I made that up now) seem to be quite a popular choice of genre these days, especially in shounen anime. This one is no different: new/transfer student entering an academy where everyone fights each other to determine who’s the strongest of them all. Main character shows potential to be very strong but we have yet to see his full power. While Gakusen Toshi Asterisk adds nothing new to the genre, it’s quite entertaining so far.

Danchigai – First Impressions

                                                                                                                                                                        I’m mostly a sucker when it comes to comedies and slice-of-life anime because I enjoy the genre very much. Danchigai is that type of anime, though its episode length doesn’t allow for much to really happen.

Imagine a world where the concept of dirty jokes is considered a crime in society. Imagine a world where the government tracks everything you do in order to prevent indecency. That is the world Shimoneta shows us and it does it in a very clever, yet humourous way.
